Breakfast: A Debate
Posted By Agnes Fidget on 09/25/2011 at 07:30PM
Of course you should go to BREAK-Fest and support Hollow Earth Radio, but should you eat breakfast? Today two Hollow Earth DJs square off on this contentious issue...

Breakfast: What is good for? Absolutely nothing.
An argument by Agnes Fidget.
Look, I like pancakes. I have even eaten waffles and a pig in a blanket or two. I am quite fond of the Waffle House establishment and the International House of Pancakes. But ultimately, breakfast is the ultimate in frippery when it comes to meals. My argument would be that lunch is far more important. In the morning, you wake up, and you don’t necessarily need to eat food, and if you do eat, it doesn’t have to be a giant meal of sausage and biscuits and bacon strips - in fact, an apple will do, or toast. You can get by even without these, if necessary. Don’t get me started on cereal, the ultimate incarnation of the nonsensical idea that breakfast is somehow necessary. Cereal was created by Big Business to make a mass amount of money off the little man by basically puffing up basic grains and pouring refined sugar over it. Count Chocula and Captain Crunch are particularly pernicious examples of the genre. Consider jam, the cornerstone of bread toppings - it is mere decoration. You don’t really need all of that fancy stuff on bread! Bread alone has all of the nutritional value you need.
Mr. Mellish suggests that lunch is ridiculous and that Subway is a telling example of what is wrong with lunch. Who else has done as much for the image of avocados as Subway? They have taken a woefully unloved vegetable and brought it to the masses.
That is my problem with the idea of breakfast - the notion of a ‘balanced breakfast’ is just an excuse to eat more bacon and pancakes. It is the ultimate in Western capitalist excess. You can skip it, and you will be okay. I know from experience that your stomach will get by despite being empty for a couple of hours because you overslept and you had to make the bus and you don’t have much money in the first place. So if you are going to go to Hollow Earth Radio’s Break-FEST, skip the pancakes and ask for a lunch, or even brunch. You don’t really need all of that delicious goodness, do you?
Breakfast: Fueling America
Counter-point by Fielding Mellish.
Agnes would have you believe breakfast is given a status of importance unbecoming of its actual value and utility, a needless addition to the modern individual’s busy routine. You know what else is a needless addition? The facile opinions on breakfast presented in this newsletter. By her.
As is commonly known, salted meats, fats and refined syrups are indispensable elements to any balanced diet. People need these key nutritional breakfast byproducts to make it through their dreary workaday lives because, otherwise, lunch would be the only meal on an already bleak horizon. And, as I will expand upon in the next paragraph, lunch is the Ghostbusters 2 of meals - inevitable and deeply disappointing.
Take, for example, Subway, the ever popular chain of submarine sandwich restaurants. I know very few people that would willingly submit to their perverted take on the “sand wich,” yet locations pop up left and right. Why does this persist? Quite simple, really: subconsciously people understand the vapidity of lunch and, in an effort to amplify and reinforce the inherent awesomeness of breakfast, they submit themselves to lunch, if only to stimulate the anticipation for tomorrow morning’s food offering. In fact, many people even put themselves to bed early just so they can eat breakfast in a timely fashion come morning.
Therefore, because breakfast is indeed the meal nonpareil, we at Hollow Earth Radio have organized the wonderful Break-Fest for our loyal and supportive listeners because they deserve only the best. Breakfast, after all, is optimistic. Breakfast is creative. Breakfast can also be strangely erotic, for some reason. THE POINT BEING, Agnes is once again coming down on the wrong side of this argument and if you happen to be sitting next to her at Break-Fest, feel free to nick some cash from her pocketbook and generously donate it to Hollow Earth in your name.

Hollow Earth Radio Invites You To BREAK-fest

BREAK-FEST: The Anti-Festival.
October 15th, 2011 ~ 11am-2pm
Hollow Earth Radio loves festivals & we know we've seen you at quite a few of them throughout the year - but by the end of the summer, we're DONE. We don't want to stand in another long line for the bathroom or sip another expensive beer through our chapped lips. It's in times like this we'd do anything for just a wonderful home-cooked breakfast with friends and a little soft rock. What if we told you we could make your dreams come true?
A Festival In A Home??
When Hollow Earth Radio first started we did our little online broadcast out of the basement of a residential home. And even though we've moved on to a rad public space in the Central District, we think that same mood has carried with us; listeners tell us that tuning in feels like hanging out with friends in their home. We're comfy homemade radio.
When planning this event we thought - let's get RIDICULOUSLY literal. Let's have an ANTI-FESTIVAL where we invite you into our homes, eat together, and raise some of the needed funds for the upcoming year. Let's take a break from all the festivals. (Get it?)
COME TO BREAK-FEST AND EAT BRUNCH WITH US AROUND THE CITY.

Here's how it will work.
