ROGUE PINAY is an emcee and cultural worker born in General Santos City, Philippines. With rhymes fluent and just as fluid in Tagalog and English, her music has been described by the Seattle Weekly as “poignant, filled with a startling amount of brutal honesty”. Often vulnerable, powerful, and always loving, her work is devoted to connecting the issues of oppressed communities in the United States to the liberation of oppressed peoples worldwide. She has inspired and moved crowds from mountain villages and mass mobilizations in the Philippines to clubs and universities across the Unites States. Her songs are dedicated to third world womyn and their resistance against imperialism and class exploitation, focusing on stories of forced migration, violence against women, downbrownqueerwomanism and revolutionary change.
She is currently working on campaigns, “U.S. Troops Out of the Philippine” and representing Alay ng Kultura with B.A.Y.A.N. USA.
LADIES FIRST SEASON is sponsored by 4Culture, Hidmo, Social HEARTistry Educators (S.H.E.), and B-Girl Media and is proud to feature: Rogue Pinay and Guest.

Native Punk Fest
Posted By DJ Garrett on 04/11/2012 at 05:56AM
Just got this note from Shonri Begay at the Evergreen State College. This looks like a rad event going on down in Olympia:
"I'm a student organizer at the Evergreen State College in Olympia. I'm part of the Native Student Alliance and we have been working hard to bring a Native Punk Festival together on April 14th. This will be an all ages event with three amazing bands: Let the World Die (Flagstaff, AZ), Lozen (Tacoma), King Elephant (Missoula, MT).
This would be a very positive show for area youth, especially Native youth. We believe that simply getting a young person on a college campus encourages them to see themselves going to college."

Details:
7pm The Evergreen State College. 2700 Evergreen Parkway NW Olympia WA 98505 in the College Activities Building
The live show features all native bands:
LET THE WORLD DIE (flagstaff, AZ)
LOZEN (tacoma)
KING ELEPHANT (Missoula, MT)

White Coward, ROGER NUSIC, Webs, Space Cadet 5 THIS FRIDAY
Posted By DJ Garrett on 03/28/2012 at 03:22AM
Friends - our fifth annual Magma Festival is coming to a close THIS WEEKEND. ARE YOU READY FOR THE ERUPTION?
Prepare yourself: This Friday kicks off an explosive weekend with the music of WHITE COWARD coming straight to your face. This explosive little band is gonna rip the place apart. Dogs and cats, living together. It will be anarchy.
Here's how Kenneth of Off Tempo describes White Coward:
"This show was packed. It was crazy how many people were there and how posi-mosh everyone was. It’s the most smiles I’ve seen in a mosh pit in a while. Troy (bassist / singer, also in Stickers) is singing whatever it is that he’s singing. I can’t understand much of it but I think a couple songs are about eating that 13 egg omelet at Beth’s Café on Aurora. I haven’t eaten that particular endtrée yet but when I can get my hands on whatever recorded material White Coward puts out in the future, I’ll look for the songs that are reviewing the experience of that meal.I remember on the trip back home, the van I was busy with talking about how great White Coward was and how great the show was overall. How much shredding and kind shoving occurred."
Pair that with legendary Roger Nusic. I know very little about this guy, other than that he's a one man band playing violin/guitar over electronic beats singing about burning money (see his album titled: "Burn or Save?" with him in piles of dollar bills). Somewhere on the internet I read that his first show was opening for Nirvana at Satyricon.
It's sure to be a thriller - I mean, check out this video!???
Here's the first verse off one of my favorite of his songs: Alternative Punky Day
Also on the bill: FAN TAS TIC Seattle pop punk band THE WEBS who have A ONE SONG DEMO here: duh webs
We also recently did an instudio w/ the band which you can download and listen to as a podcast here
Also, completely unpredictable Gio Ricci has a new band Space Cadet 5. He's one of our dj's here at the station but no one has seen him in months. He is an international man of mystery.
This all goes down THIS FRIDAY at Hollow Earth Radio! Get there at like 8:30. We start prompt.

Trading Musician Drumset UPDATE & Rad Videos from the Teen Showcase
Posted By DJ Garrett on 03/23/2012 at 08:28PM
Wanted to give a status update on the $700 drumset that Trading Musician donated to our raffle! We have a winner! It's young Devin of the fabulous band "The Pink Pajamas". He was totally excited to get the prize (of course). And although he is the guitar player in the band, they've been having to borrow the neighbors kit to practice so now they'll have a brand new shiny one! So exciting!
BTW - if you missed the Teen Showcase, you really missed out. I've been helping curate the Magma Festival for the past five years, and it was probably up there as one of my favorite shows we've done. All the bands were super tight and the place was just crawling with young people dancing around like crazy and supporting each other. I guess I've become jaded thinking that no one will dance at shows anymore, but this weekend made me realize - "hey, no one dances at the shows you go to because you are old and everyone else there is old". I saw teenagers stage diving and whipping their hair. It was an absolute blast! Here are two videos from the show, the bands Yellow Peril and Rat Riot (Bellingham).
If you have any other video, let me know!
We wanted to thank Trading Musician again for making this happen and helping keep the festival alive! Also, here are all the sponsors for the entire Magma Festival, and here's a special thank you to them as well. We really appreciate it. If you frequent any of these places, let them know that's it rad they took the time to give to our freaky little radio station.
