Description:
I spent a good chunk of time growing up in the 90's (ten years in fact). As a result, I developed strong ties to the music made in that decade. It meant something to me. It was the soundtrack to my personal development. I was glued to the radio every single day with something that is as close to religious devotion as I have ever experienced. It wasn't all good, in fact a lot of it wasn't. But that was part of the experience, wasn't it? The joy I felt when I heard a Weezer song was as potent as the contempt I felt towards Seven Mary Three. They are both powerful reactions that stick with me to this day. This show is not about what is or was hip. Its not about corporate vs. independent. I'm not trying to make a statement. Its just about remembering those songs, the feelings and sounds that were in the air at the time. I remember an olympic figure skater talking about how she was listening to Nirvana on her walkman. I remember having a Maryanne/Ginger crush thing going on with Gwen Stefani and Shirley Manson. I remember actually liking Green Day and reading the lyrics in the liner notes with my friends. What I'm most interested in though, is remembering all those songs that we can barely recall. The songs that hover just at the edge of memory. The mild hits that fill in all the gaps between Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins and Third Eye Blind. Call it nostalgia if you must, but I feel like its more of an act of preservation. Of keeping these songs in our memory so that they don't disappear, and our associated memories along with them.
