Description:

Late Nights for the Longing (LNftL) is arranged to play music of underrepresented artists in the NW and beyond. Providing airtime for in-studios, new music, and support of local music happenings for the underground-DIY music/arts community of the NW. The program also airs live recordings of shows taking place in alternative spaces in the NW, produced by music documentation project, Off Tempo. Story behind the program: When I was in my younger days - youth, as we call it in the biz - I had insomnia. Still have it, but it’s not as often and as bad as it was. I drew and wrote comics, so it seemed that activity was a perfect fit with my insomnia for an OCD driven 16 year old kid. Unfortunately, my parents had set a bed time to be 9:00. It was a seemingly arbitrary time with a semi-logical reason to go to bed and it didn’t make any sense to me since I was always barely sleepy. I also lived on a farm fifteen miles out of town, which is a lot when you can’t drive a car and can’t/don’t go into town unless it’s for school or trips with your parents. It’s that sentiment of isolation that brings out the worst feeling of lonliness. So in these consistent funks of loneliness and depression while attempting to sleep between 9:00PM and 1:00AM I would listen to the radio in hopes that I could hear someone else talk over the other end of the wire. I would intimately listen to what was coming through my headphones over the “Alternative” radio station. I’d listen to tapes, or playback They Might Be Giants until I’d fall asleep. Listening to Loveline was incredibly important to me, not due to the hilarious (mostly sex-based) and interesting discussions but because there were two people on the other end that were listening and that you could talk to… About your sexy problems… Late Nights for the Longing is about that: someone being on the other end of the radio for the periods of the night where you might not be able to sleep, your lonely, you have to study, you want to dance in your room in your underwear to your favorite music.
